Formative Assessments: Inform teaching and learning (Where am I going? How am I going? Where to next?). - Align with enduring understandings/learning targets and summative assessments. - Help students prepare for summative assessments and, therefore, should be completed before summative assessments. - Are not graded (ideal) or are awarded so few points that earning/not earning formative “points” does not independently make or break a student’s grade (i.e. no more than 10% of overall grade).
Summative Assessments:Provide evidence of what students know, can do, and understand. - Align with enduring understandings/learning targets. - Are graded. - Have specific due dates. - If students miss a due date, they may turn in the assignment for full credit after meeting stipulations. - Part of the “stipulated second chance” will be that the summative is completed within two weeks of the original due date. - Depending on the circumstances, teachers may choose to accept late summative assessments beyond the two-week grace period.
Re-Assessments:Are opportunities to demonstrate new learning (i.e. revising a paper or project, completing test corrections, re-taking part of a test, teacher-student conferences, etc.). - Occur after additional learning/practice (stipulated second chances) but within two weeks of the original due date. - Depending on the circumstances, teachers may choose to accept re- assessments beyond the two-week grace period. - Lead to new/replacement grade on summative assessments.
